I studied painting in Budapest with György Kádár, then one of Hungary's foremost artists. It was also there, during my high school years, where I learned the machining and tool and die-making skills that form the mechanical foundation of the current works.

My early years were spent under the Hungarian fascist regime and later under the Soviet occupation. I escaped and immigrated to this country after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

My professional life has been in neuroscience research, currently as the John Evans Professor of Neuroscience Emeritus at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.

I am self-taught, but my work is informed by studying contemporary art since high-school days and collecting since the 1960s – producing a representative collection of Chicago Imagist and later Haitian art.

In 1998 I began making sculptures and have been a professional sculptor since my retirement in 2012. I make small-scale welded-steel and mixed-media works.

I began my sculpting by producing a series of autobiographical pieces, The “War Series” (now in the permanent collection of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum), which later evolved into “The Struggle Series,” expressing strife between western civilization and its adversaries, be that nihilism, terror, anarchy, or the abused environment. Parts of this series were exhibited in a solo show at the Weizman Art Museum of the University of Minnesota. A similar dystopic evolution was the “End of the Road” series, in which an individual arrives at some seemingly insurmountable barrier.

During isolation in our mountain cabin during the Covid years, I became unexpectedly encouraged by the life force of the mountain greenery and gave up on the angst-ridden work done previously. I started to make flowers, potted ones, or wildflowers emerging from found forest wood. It is this latter work that I show here.

I have participated in numerous group shows, a two-person exhibit at the Ukrainian Museum of Art in Chicago, have had solo shows at commercial galleries in New York and Chicago as well as at the Art Center Gallery of Coastal Carolina. My work is in private collections in the US and Europe.
