“I am thrilled to be able to paint.”
Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, HeeJune Shin came to the United States in 1978. She and her husband, a retired neurologist, moved to Bluffton in 2020. Prior to pursuing the study of painting as a career more than 20 years, she obtained an MPH in nutrition at UNC-Chapel Hill.
“Light is the subject of my painting. I am a modern colorist in the tradition of Monet, Hawthrone, Henche, and Przewodek. Like many impressionists, I have sought visual growth through years of painting plein air, painting on location, striving for truer quality of color in nature. I love to paint with a palette knife which adds freshness and intimacy to the illusion of light.”
HeeJune received the McKnight Established Artist Grant in 2012 and 2016 as a colorist. She has received much recognition including as a featured artist of Winefest for the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital. She also was selected for the Art in Embassies Program of US Department of State. Her paintings are shown in many private and public places all over the world.
“I am excited to be in front of a white canvas looking at the object before my eyes. It is never the same: light in different weather, seasons, times of the day. I trust my impulse to see the colors of the moment and plunge into making one shape of color at a time. It is a thrill when a painting emerges from these shapes of colors: a strikingly beautiful illusion of light in three dimensions. I hope my painting will bless you as we see the light together”
